MARTIAN MANHUNTER and Other New DC Character Cars FOUND!

For a while there I was a little worried at how many Character Cars were on the horizon, but holy guacamole, retailers seem to be keeping up for the time being (well, almost) and luckily with a little bit of patience, most of these guys have fallen into my lap.

Martian Manhunter and New DC Character Cars

Yeah yeah, originally I included Aquaman in this picture because I was convinced of some slight difference, but it turns out that it’s identical to the Justice League version.

Let’s get to the most unique new DCU Character Car, Martian Manhunter. They did a great job nailing down the colors, with a deep dark green, and the whole thing has a kind of cool red-blue-green-yellow (sometimes reference as our “psychological primaries”) theme going on. Both his cape and cloak clasp are built into the car’s design and get this: the “cape” part even opens up to show off some fancy engine parts. Besides the fact that he’s big and green, there’s not a lot of blatant one to two word descriptors for Martian Manhunter so I think the design was pulled off well. I might’ve gone for a slightly longer car myself, but overall I’m pleased.

Moving onward, we get the tail end of the Sketched Series, with Joker GT and Harley Quinn at 4/5 and 5/5 respectively. I’ve elaborated on my thoughts on the necessity of these “Sketched” cars in previous articles, similar to the Comic Book Styling subset of Marvel Character Cars. In short, I think the idea holds some merit, but I kinda think that this out-of-universe depiction of the characters takes away from the Character Cars as a whole. The vehicles are done well and I get the concept being put forth, it just doesn’t excite me much. Anywho, at least this subset has been put to rest and hopefully we can get back to more essential designs, i.e. heavyweights like Darkseid, Lex Luthor, Scarecrow, Nightwing, etc.

Aquaman and Hawkman were re-released as well, though neither appear to be anything new. Hawkman has remained unchanged for quite a while now and the Aquaman is the version we saw after the hokey torpedo-esque design but before the latest Justice League iteration. Basically it’s the one with the water and with the shiny gold stuff.

And that, as they say, is that! I know this is pointless, but here’s some characters I want to see enter the pantheon in the near future: (And why the hell didn’t we get a Steppenwolf for Justice League….?)

  • Lex Luthor
  • Darkseid
  • Scarecrow
  • Sinestro
  • Nightwing
  • Red Robin
  • Red Hood
  • Blue Beetle
  • Deathstroke
  • Ra’s al Ghul
  • Clayface
  • Reverse Flash
  • Superboy Prime

Those are my big ones. I wouldn’t mind seeing others – Gorilla Grodd, Firestorm, Hawkgirl, and so on, but the above are kinda like my “main” picks. I was going to add Mera and Black Manta but I think they’ll be coming our way via the Aquaman film pretty soon so I’ll hold of. (What about Ocean Master…?)

Alrighty then…drop me a comment and tell me whatcha think of these new additions and/or who’d you most like to see make the future cut. I realize that some repetition will probably always be in order so that the most relevant and visible characters are routinely available, I just hope that Hot Wheels is smart enough to keep digging around in that back catalog for all-new faces.

POISON IVY Found – SKETCHED SERIES (1 – 3) Found – Hot Wheels DC Character Cars

NOTE: This piece is a couple of days later than it should be – I ran into some problems getting my pictures edited so yeah. I’ll probably have this notice up on the next couple of articles as well. When I say “a week ago” I mean like a week ago from this past Thursday or Friday. I know I know, I”m slow, I’m trying.

So this story goes back about a week to late Thursday night / early Friday morning. For the life of me I can’t really figure out my local Walmart or Target stocks shit. Every time I think I’ve got a handle on it something fucks up. I miss one day out of 10 and damned if I didn’t miss something. Anyway, point is I try to make some time everyday to visit my closest Walmart and my closest Target. Throughout the week I venture a little further out. This results in lots…and lots…and lots…of misses, but it does afford me those super-rare hits, such as the second wave of Starships released in conjunction with Solo, not to mention the final wave of Last Jedi Character Cars, all 4 of which I managed to find on a shelf, and 3 of ’em I found more than once.

Of course I never know what’s rare when I get it – we can make some reasonable guesses, but we can never know at the time whether it’s rare or not. I truly don’t think it’s an issue of overwhelming demand though. I mean I’m sure it has something to do with it, but usually in these cases the supply eventually catches up. It might take a month or two or three but it evens out. I don’t know what happens with these later waves – distribution issues? Maybe a lack of demand…? I would say low production numbers but when these things can’t survive 48 hours on a shelf this seems like a silly move. Maybe it’s just not profitable to release stuff ever so long after a movie or whatever, which is why these 2nd and especially 3rd (and sometimes 4th) wave releases can be such a headache to find.

DC Sketched Series

The (kinda) good news is that with DC at the moment we don’t really have that problem because there’s no highly visible DC product out there right now. I recently found out about the Sketched Series, and while it felt like a bit of a cash grab, I don’t mind supporting it for $4 a pop. However, I would not be the sucker shelling out $10 or $12 a piece plus another $3 to $5 in shipping for them. Well hot dickin’ dog there they sat on the shelf! Well, 3 of them at least. But that’s not all!

Hot Wheels - Poison Ivy

To my absolute delight and surprise, there she was, Poison Ivy good ol’ Character Car form! Now I know my bud C. dropped a comment about her recently but I actually didn’t see that until a few hours after I got home. And as much as I love early info, it’s also nice to be surprised like that. And Poison Ivy of all people, one of the DC villains who had my strongest support for inclusion. So yeah. Hell yeah.

The way the cars were laid out on the shelf makes me think that Sketched cars 4 and 5 (Harley & Joker GT) do not yet exist, or at least not on a retail level. The way it looked was if Walmart had gotten 2 cases. I can’t be sure what was in which, but I can make a reasonable guess:

Case A:

  • 4 each Sketched Series Batman (1 / 5)
  • 2 each Sketched Series Superman (2 / 5)
  • 2 each Sketched Series Catwoman (3 / 5)

Case B:

  • 2 each Batman Rebirth
  • 2 each Robin 2.0T
  • 2 each Flash (the real old-school version from back in the blue card days>)
  • 2 each Poison Ivy
Sketched Batman

Batman – Sketched Series

So that was pretty cool to see Batman Rebirth in retail for the first time. Robin 2.0T made it out a few weeks back, and then I suppose the re-released Flash was a good chance for newer collectors to snatch him up. I grabbed one just in case, and there doesn’t appear to be any major differences. The yellow bits on the newer release might lean just a hair more towards orange than the older one, but I can’t imagine this being an intentional difference.

Sketched Superman

Superman – Sketched Series

With the way that’s all laid out, it doesn’t leave any room for Sketched Harley & Joker, not even an elusive “1 per case.” I kinda wish Hot Wheels would quit breaking up these subsets; I mean I get it, they’re doing it to keep people busy scanning the shelves longer and thus exposing them to more product over a longer period of time, but the practice still irks me and to be honest it’s a bit of kick in the balls to those of us who are hardcore. Maybe not a full-on pissing blood crotch kick, but a swift tap at the very least.

Sketched Catwoman

Catwoman – Sketched Series

Overall I like the aesthetic of the Sketched Series. I think if they wanted to full embrace it they maybe should’ve given us new actual designs, perhaps to reflect older and/or more abstract visions of said characters.

Poison Ivy Character Car

Poison Ivy

Poison Ivy is a decent reflection of the character…probably not what I would’ve gone with, but I do like the green (her body, I guess) and the orange (her “red” hair, often illustrated as orange). I would’ve preferred more overt plant imagery like leaves and vines and flower buds. And maybe some feminization wouldn’t hurt, since she’s often a sort of forbidden seductress.

Good stuff eh? Let me know when those Harleys and Jokers start to pop up! And now that Poison Ivy is a reality, lets use our energies to collectively will a Scarecrow into existence! Either that or a solid Superman Rogues Gallery; we’ve got Doomsday already, but we need General Zod, Lex Luthor, Darkseid, and Brainiac, and possibly Bizarro. And maybe Superboy Prime if they’ve got reason enough to believe people will know who the hell he is.

Ok that’s it! But stick around because I’m working hard to schedule several articles to drop and hopefully you’ll be seeing another one soon!

New DC Character Cars SKETCHED SERIES Spotted!

Well this is an interesting find that I stumbled across on eBay a day or two go. It’s car 1/5 of what’s labeled the Sketchd Series. The “sketched” part seems to refer to the similar paint jobs on all the cars. It’s pretty simple really; the cars start off with a white base and their details are filled in to look like a sketch: short, swift strokes, cross-hatching, maybe some smudging.

Batman: Sketched Series

I have no idea what the availability of this set looks like right now. Currently there’s a single car on eBay going for $29.99. The seller was conscientious enough to post a pic of the back.

  • 1 / 5 – Batman
  • ? / 5 – Superman
  • ? / 5 – Catwoman
  • ? / 5 – Harley Quinn
  • ? / 5 – Joker GT

DC Sketched Series

Without any new designs, new characters, and the same paint job carried across all the vehicles, this set definitely leaves me scratching my head a little. C’mon Hot Wheels, you’ve got so much uncharted DC territory – Teen Titans (I would really like to see Starfire and Deathstroke / Slade get some love), lots more Batman rogues (I really want Poison Ivy and Scarecrow), Bat-family (Nightwing, Batwoman, Red Hood, Red Robin), heavyweights from Superman (Lex Luthor, Zod, Darkseid, Brainiac, Bizarro), and any number of other cool characters like Blue Beetle, Black Manta, Gorilla Grodd…but no no, we get…the…Sketched Series. I’m sure they look cool, it just feels like they’re really reaching considering the amount of source material at hand.

How do you feel? Cool idea, novel approach? Or total cash grab? You tell me!
