The Newest Star Wars Character Cars: Nien Nunb & Heavy Infantry Mandalorian

Alright alright, cut me a little slack here. I know these Character Cars aren’t exactly new but they are at least the latest we’ve seen from Star Wars. As somewhat expected, one of the newcomers was pulled from the new The Mandalorian> TV series: the Heavy Infantry Mandalorian. Joining him (her?) is the marginally obscure Nien Nunb, who is easily one of my favorite marginally obscure characters. It’s tough to stretch Nien out to top-tier status, but I generally stuck him in a 2nd-tier slot if for no other reason than that he was Lando’s copilot in the Battle of Endor. If you think about it, this would really put his name out there. You’ve got this huge battle that marked a massive political shift that the Rebels one against all odds…you just know that the co-pilot of the freakin’ Millennium Falcon has his name written all over historical sources.

Nien Nunb and Heavy Infantry Mandalorian

Our favorite Sullustan pops up again in The Rise of Skywalker. There is some confusion as to whether or not Nien survived the Battle of Exegol. A lot of people count his departure just as unceremonious as Admiral Ackbbar; others say that despite the Tantive IV (where Nien was) being crippled by Palpatine’s Force-Lightning, it is shown lading safely near the end. We’ll probably never know, though the new directors seem A O-K with killing off any and everything from the OT.

Nien Nunb

Griping aside, I think the Nien Nunb car looks pretty good. If you were familiar with Nien and someone showed you that car I believe the average fan would make the connection, mostly due to the colors and placement. The vehicle doesn’t really capture his unique facial shape, but I’m ok with that as I feel like any attempt to do so would just look like Nien’s face on four wheels. The blasters along the rocker panels are a nice touch.

I wish I had more to say about the Heavy Infantry Mandalorian, but based on the Black Series action figure the Character Car looks pretty good. The backpack or ammo reserve or power supply or whatever it is is well represented and the 3-barreled gun thingy can be seen on the front right. There are lots of little components and details that are not symmetrical from left to right which really helps connect the vehicle to the character. Honestly this strikes me as a somewhat strange choice since so many other characters have been (so far) left behind, but I do appreciate that Hot Wheels didn’t half-ass it. It’s a great looking vehicle even if a little random.

Heavy Infantry Mandalorian

Hot Wheels, if you’re listening: We desperately need Character Cars for Qui-Gon Jinn, Padme, Count Dooku, Mace Windu, and please please please crank us out a BODHI! I could do a full-on Rogue One recreation it you’d just throw me a Bodhi!

Ok that’s it – just wanna put one of those little blurbs our every now and again in the off chance that someone comes across it.

Hot Wheels Star Wars Character Cars

I doubt Star Wars is done, but they do seem to be on a cool-down, eh? When and with what do you think they’ll pop back up with? More stuff from Mandalorian? Characters like Cal and Darth Revan from the video games? This line of toys has a high collectibility value so even if a Star Wars-breather is needed it wouldn’t be difficult to keep collectors interested.

10 Star Wars Character Cars I Want to See in 2020

It’s no secret – the merchandising machine that is Star Wars is slowing down fast. With mixed fan reception over virtually all of the new films, a general oversaturation, and a lukewarm “grand finale,” it’s easy to see why so much steam has been lost.

Star Wars Toys

Shadows of the Empire

Maybe this would be a good time to revisit some older material, right? Forget all the strange gimmicks of the past, let’s bounce back on the tried and true Character Cars. For this list, anything theatrically released is fair game, including the Prequel, Original, and Sequel Trilogies and the 2 Anthology films. I would say the canon cartoons are fair game, but I’m just not familiar with them. I may pull someone from other media, though it’s hard to justify since Disney de-canonized almost everything. For instance I’d love to see all the big players from Shadows of the Empire, but not only is it de-canonized, it’s pretty damn obscure at this point so there’s no point in rallying for Prince Xizor or Dash Rendar. Aw fuck it, these are just 10 Character Cars I really want to see, and when we’re being given characters like R2-Q5 and Biggs Darklighter and the Executioner Stormtrooper, I don’t feel like I need to go too far outta my way to justify basically any of my choices!

1. Qui-Gon Jinn

Qui-Gon Jinn

Qui-Gon is one of the most interesting characters that we never really get to meet – and perhaps we’re all the better for it considering the state of the Prequel Trilogy. I’m not gonna bother with trying to assign him some kinda “power level” in comparison to other Jedi. What interests me most is how he chose to work with the Jedi Council but refused to be an actual part of it, as if to say, “as long as your scruples align with mine, we’re all good, but should there be a disagreement, I’m free to do what I feel is right, not what the Council deems right.” His status as an outsider, and the subsequent effect on Obi-Wan, and by extension Anakin, is a really meaty dynamic that’s hardly addressed.

Part of me wants to see more of Qui-Gon, but I think he had the perfect amount of screen time. We don’t need to keep retelling the story of master and apprentice and Qui-Gon’s overall impact on the acquisition and training of Anakin is shown adequately enough. Now Qui-Gon’s younger years would be worth a story, and I wouldn’t mind seeing some “greatest hits” footage of his coming’s and going’s as a force ghost.

So why don’t we have a Qui-Gon Character Car yet? I guess it’s just an effect of the “PT Hell” that it’s stuck in but the fact that we did see a Jar Jar car late last year give me a little hope.

2. Mace Windu

Mace Windu

Though not nearly as fleshed out or as important as Qui-Gon, Mace appears to be a Jedi heavyweight outside of his involvement with all the Skywalker business. The purple lightsaber is enough of conversation starter on its own. As the tale goes, he’s the greatest swordsmen the Jedi have ever seen. The films don’t offer much in the way of characterization. Jackson is a fantastic actor but the script gives him next to nothing to work with and we’re sortta left to work out what Mace is like on our own.

He’s bound to have a killer backstory, what with all his “Form 7” darkside-harnessing lightsaber style. Surely it’s at least more interesting than being accepted into the order as a youngling. I’d love to see a more thorough exploration of Mace’s strengths with the Force as well as what ultimately tethers him to the Jedi Council, or perhaps even the revelation that he’s a de facto leader of the Council.

Now normally I’m of the opinion that “dead is dead.” If we’re shown what could reasonably considered to be a death on screen and aren’t given any clues like a hand popping out of the ground, that character is dead. Anything less than that is just filmmakers lying to their audience, so obviously I’m not a fan of how Darth Maul didn’t really die after being sliced in half….not to mention that other surprising survivor as of late. Mace suffered a similar fate – flung out of an umpteenth story window with a severed arm and coursing with Force-lightning….however, I actually wouldn’t mind seeing Mace make a comeback from this.

So maybe Mace didn’t do much during his time on screen, hell, he isn’t even that likable, but he’s got enough of a backstory to make for a mesmerizing character and he definitely deserves his own Character Car in the already prequel-light collection.

3. Bodhi

Now I don’t know whether or not this was just some sick joke that keeps some decision-maker-guy up giggling at night, or the answer spat out by some stupid equation, or a gross oversight, or even an honest to god “we’ll get to it” and just never did, but it’s fucking appalling. Now I know Cassian was super hard to find for some people and that’s regretful, but at least the damn thing exists.

Bodhi Rook

Bodhi, however, has been left out the cold. Without a doubt the Rogue One team was: Cassian, Jen, K-2SO, Baze, Chirrut, & Bodhi. He wasn’t on the sidelines, he wasn’t a little helper or spy, he was a piece of the damn hexagon! Moreover, he was one of the driving forces behind the film’s plot. Bodhi was the damn pilot who defected to the Rebels. He turned himself in and surrendered all of his super-secret knowledge to save lives and restore peace!

At first I thought they’d push him back a wave or so, or maybe tag him as an exclusive to some kind of multi-pack or trackset even. It would make sense. We finally got a Finn car come The Last Jedi; before that, he was relegated to an obscure trackset. (I think that’s still the only way to get the “clean” Finn.) None of that came to pass. We still don’t have a damn Bodhi. Just gussy up a nimble but sturdy Jeeps, throw on a couple of blasters, work Bodhi’s goggles into the mix to keep it identifiable, and boom, we’re good to go!

And you know, I might’ve let it go…but then they made a Saw Gerrera car. I got no probs with a Saw Character Car and I’m glad they made ’em but how can you include Saw and omit Bodhi!?!?

4. Padme Amidala

Queen Padme Amidala

It’s Anakin’s main squeeze, it’s the mother of Luke and Leia, it’s the queen of friggin’ Naboo: give her a character car! I mean I really don’t need to harp on too much about Padme’s importance. Sure, Portman’s performance is sorta stilted and constipated. She’s typically regarded as a fine actress from films all the way from The Professional up through Black Swan, so we’re gonna chalk this up to the good ol’ Harrison Ford quote in action: “George, you can type this shit, but you sure can’t say it!”

Her array of royal outfits, particularly in The Phantom Menace, would be an easy source of inspiration for some amazing looking Character Cars.

5. Tobias Beckett

I know this one might raise a few eyebrows, but I contend that if Solo had gotten even a fraction of the merchandising treatment that other films have, we’d have gotten Character Cars of not only Beckett, but Rio, Val, Dryden Vos, and L3-3T. Hell, any and all of them deserve a spot above the Range Trooper, Moloch, and Enfys Nest. I know it’s tempting to go after “coolest looking,” but I tend to lean towards narrative relevance.

Tobias Beckett

Beckett was a somewhat archetypal cowboy spaceman grifter, but the way he both mentored and undermined Han Solo was pretty interesting. I know Solo raises a whole ton of controversy about Han’s characterization, but it’s still Beckett who gives Han his edge and helps him become a smuggler. He’s impacted Han’s life in a number of ways, both negative and positive, and I think he sincerely wanted to take him on as a partner. Of course Han had too much of a conscience to fully immerse himself in Tobias’ world, so Beckett did him one last favor and taught him the hard lesson of betrayal…which, as bad as Beckett’s was, was about to be tenfold more relevant in the next few moments.

Tobias Beckett is perhaps cookie cutter at worst and understated at best, but with Woody Harrelson’s rather subdued performance we’re given the impression of a man who has been through the ringer, and I think this is supposed to be the viewer’s impression of Han after meeting him for the first time back A New Hope.

6. Count Dooku

Count Dooku

Dooku wasn’t a huge player in the films, but he was a central antagonist in the Clone Wars and he is one of a few actual Sith (Darth Tyrannus) that we know of. He is a major cog in the machine that morphs the Republic into the Empire so he’s definitely seen and done a lot more than most of the characters we meet during the prequels. I don’t have a whole to comment on – though I do wish he had some iconic aspect of his appearance to remember him by. Basically his sheer importance and level of involvement earn him a bonafide Character Car. Even if you don’t see Dooku as a major player, please, try to remember that Character cars of Maz and BB-9E have been made…

7. Darth Revan

Darth Revan

If a single character from the video games could be plucked out to put in a movie tomorrow, it’d be Darth Revan. I don’t want to sit here and pretend I know more than I do about him, but from what I understand he as incredible story arc that spans both Jedi and Sith. I think it’d behoove Disney to take some of these characters that have already been somewhat established rather than create all new ones and Revan would be the perfect start.

As far as Character Cars go, just look at the guy. He’s awesome! He’s got a hybrid of Mandalorian armor and Sith aesthetics…I mean this would be the kinda thing to offer up at SDCC or Star Wars Celebration!

8. General Hux

General Armitage Hux

I wish they’d dug into this guy a little more than they did, though the revelation given in Rise of Skywalker is enough to make me want to know all about his backstory. I doubt his treason will ever be explored beyond that of a plot convenience…but it should be! Just like with any war, even the faceless cannon fodder have their stories to tell, and I think Hux would be at least a decent vehicle for said story. I know the focus on him recedes a bit after Force Awakens, but damn, he gives a pretty wicked speech aboard the Starkiller Base just before it annihilates the Hosnian System.

9. Bib Fortuna

Bib Fortuna

Again, not one of the biggest characters around, but the fact that he was Jabba’s majordomo gives him a degree of clout. I think it’d be great to get some backstory on Bib and how he came to be in Jabba’s employ. Was he confined to servitude or did he work with Jabba of his own volition? I think it’d be fun to explore the relation of crime to the struggle between the Empire and Rebellion, and Bib could be a solid lens to look through. Besides, Bib is hella weird looking and would make a fantastic Character Car.

10. Nien Nunb

Nien Nunb

I dunno why, but I’ve always had a soft spot for this lil’ mousey lookin’ guy. I don’t know much about him, hell, I don’t even know if there is much to know about him, except that’s from Sullust and he’s probably in the upper echelon of Rebel/New Republic/Resistance pilots (or co-pilots). How can we make such a lofty assumption? Think about the circumstance: prior to the final battle in Return of the Jedi, the Rebel Alliance wasn’t a cohesive unit. They were scattered bands of freedom fighters doing what they could when they could against the Empire, but in that particular climate, it was extremely hard for them to organize, be it because of intercepted communications, limited equipment, and the fact that any larger gatherings or semi-permanent bases quickly attracted the attention of the Empire. The Battle of the Endor was the first of its kind – so many of these little chunks had finally banded together to take out his threat.

So here we are, a historic galactic offensive against the tyranny and oppression of evil men. The lead dogfighter is the Millennium Falcon, piloted by none other than Lando. Now Lando is well aware of the Falcon’s capabilities, but he also knows she can be a bit temperamental, so who does he choose to sit next to him? None other than Nien Nunb. That’s some high praise.

Honorable Mentions

Wedge Antilles

Wedge Antilles

This was a tough guy to leave off the list and my mind might change from one day to the next. He never does much narratively, but he’s one of an elite group of very few veterans of both the Battle of Yavin and the Battle of Endor (both Death Stars) – and possibly even the little skirmish surrounding Hoth. The one big limitation here is creating a Wedge car that’s visually distinct from Luke, Biggs, and Poe.

Dengar, 4-LOM, & Zuckuss

Bounty Hunters

Obviously these are 3 different people, but none of them are really fleshed out enough to warrant 3 discrete entries. I probably wouldn’t mind so much if we didn’t already have the more visible half of this group: Boba Fett, IG-88, and Bossk. Their distinctive appearances would make for some great cars, and how damn cool would it be to have that iconic lineup of bounty hunters from Empire Strikes Back in Character Car form????

Nute Gunray

Nute Gunray

This guy ain’t all that exciting, but he is basically the face of bureaucratic evil in Episode 1. Of course he’s just a puppet of Palpatine, but I do like the look of the race and think it would translate well into some kind of semi-aquatic vehicle.

Dryden Vos

Dryden Vos

I mentioned Dryden earlier as part of a larger group of Solo characters that I think should be Character Cars, and Dryden might just edge them out since he’s the main Big Bad of the film. I know there’s a great car between the scars and those weird laser-blade things.

Grand Admiral Thrawn

Grand Admiral Thrawn

One of the biggest casualties of Disney’s re-categorization of what is and isn’t canon amid the Expanded Universe is definitely Admiral Thrawn. His popularity has led to him being reintroduced into canon, however, in a different role than that of Palpatine’s successor after the Battle of Endor. Still, I think a Character Car is in order, if for no other reason than to recognize the role in which the books of the EU have had in keeping the franchise alive for so many years.

WHEW I think that covers it. I know we won’t get all of these in 2020 but maybe 3 or 4…? That would be nice. I’m kinda peeved about all the prequel characters left out but I’m in an absolute stir over the omission of Bodhi while people are scalping each other on eBay for random-ass droids! I’m also aware that this isn’t really a new topic for me and clearly I like to look at it from time to time and try to figure out what’s going on. The one thing that’s changed on the Star Wars front is the appearance of a Jar Jar Binks Character Car and I guess that’s a win. Detestable as he is, he does deserve a Character Car so….

What do you guys and gals think? Will we get any of these main characters as we move into a slower period of Star Wars stuff? Or does it all need to disappear for 9 – 15 months before we worry too much about new things? Obviously we’re at the end of an era here, but we’re simultaneously moving into a new one as opposed to simply shelving the property for an indeterminate period of time. Soooo are all bets off…? Star Wars Character Cars – Lightside vs. Darkside Character Car 6-Pack (Hot Wheels)

Whoo hoo a real life 6-pack of Character Cars! They may have sort of packaged 6 together back around the release of Justice League, but even so, these were just the cars in their regular, single packages and then those were stuffed into a box. This new 6-pack is designed to hold cars, and in a very cool way I might add. The front flaps open to reveal each pair of cars facing each other in a versus-like fashion, “lightside” (never really heard it put like that) on the left, darkside on the right.

Star Wars 6-Pack

The top slot, roughly representative of the Prequel Trilogy, is devoted to Yoda “vs.” Darth Maul. I put “vs.” in quotes because, well, Yoda and Darth Maul never had a face off. In fact, we saw most of Yoda’s action in Episodes II and III while Maul was limited to Phantom Menace. I dunno, it’s just an off pairing, and a real waste considering characters like Mace, Dooku, Padme, and Qui-Gon still don’t have cars in their likeness. I’m not sure that any one match would accurately sum up the trilogy…but the Emperor seems to be the best pick for the darkside. If we were to think of things a little more abstractly, Mace could represent the Jedi Council (and go up against Palpatine) or Padme could represent the Republic (and go up against Palpatine), or you could even go for an “Anakin vs. Anakin” thing.

Star Wars 6-Pack

The next pairing, from the Original Trilogy, is of course Luke Skywalker (in pilot garb) vs. Darth Vader. These 2 act as the set’s draw – they are exclusive versions of said cars with nice shiny, metallic paint. They look pretty good, though the metallic paint doesn’t translate as well from Vader’s blackness. Also, I know that being a pilot was a big part of Luke’s identity, but I do not get why this is the design they default to! Good choice of rivals for the flicks though – I don’t think anyone would argue.

Exclusive Luke & Vader Character Cars

Finally we need a pair for the Sequel Trilogy, and we get Rey vs. Kylo Ren. Makes perfect sense, right? Of course. It actually makes too much sense. The problem is that this is the only real rivalry we’re given (so far)! There isn’t anyone else left that could occupy these spots! Not sure if it really means anything or not, but it is interesting that they give us Rey in her most recent, Episode 9 appearance yet Kylo maintains his “older” look instead of the Episode 9 “Supreme Leader Kylo Ren” update.

Exclusive Luke Skywalker Character Car

If you’re a collector, you’ll definitely want to get this for the exclusive Luke and Vader. You could also use Rey in her newest iteration if you haven’t picked her up yet as a single. Oh and don’t go expecting to find this set just anywhere. So far I’ve only seen it for sale at GameStops; go figure.

Exclusive Darth Vader Character Car

I like the idea behind commemorative sets like these, and I think this is a pretty good theme even if they did botch the first pair a bit. I hesitate to mention it, but as it is it’s just a little too flimsy to be a real decorative piece. For instance the flaps are held shut by a round sticker. Why not use a small magnet like the new Hot Wheels id boxes? I’d also have the cardboard a grade or two thicker just to protect itself a little more from damage and creasing. Lastly I’d perforate the plastic hanger thing so that it could be torn off easily after purchase. The way it is now you can push it down, but then it just gets sorta lost somewhere in the folds of the box. Still, it’s a nice set as it is and gives people a chance to gather up some important characters in a single swoop. Hopefully we see more of these as we move into the new year!

NEW Star Wars Character Cars and Starships – The Rise of Skywalker (Hot Wheels)!

Quick Note: Yes, this has been a long time coming and I apologize if it feels a little out of date. I found the stuff, and then it took me forever to get around to doing all the pics, and then I had to write the whole thing up. I haven’t seen these things spread too far yet, so hopefully this will be a first look for some of you out there!

So sometime very recently – like a week or two tops – the latest wave of Character Cars and Starships from Episode IX hit stores. And if you ever doubted Kohl’s, well, here’s a reason not to. I found all 4 new Starships at one Kohl’s (after finding only Poe’s (New) X-wing at a nearby Target) and then a few days later grabbed all 3 new Character Cars at the Kohl’s much nearer my house. Everything was priced like a dollar more than usual, but at the register they knocked something like $0.78 off of each item, so yeah. To match the rest of my collection I need to get at least one more each of the Sith and Jet Troopers, 3 more of each if I can manage it. Let’s take a closer look…

Oh and while we’re at it we’ll take a quick look at the initial wave of Ep. 10 Character Cars and spend a few minutes on that first wave of Starships (at least the new/different ones) which I don’t think I’ve covered at all.

Character Cars

Rise of Skywalker Character Cars

First let us go over all the relevant Character Cars from the first and second waves. Like every release, there are plenty of re-releases which I am not covering. Also, while the “First Appearance” label is useful, it isn’t always used as “technically” as I probably would, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.

Rise of Skywalker Character Cars - Wave 1

  • Wave 1
    • D-0
    • Rey (New Casting)
    • Supreme Leader Kylo Ren (New Design / Paint Job)
  • Wave 2
    • The Mandalorian
    • Sith Trooper
    • Jet Trooper

Rise of Skywalker Character Cars - Wave 2

All of these are labeled First Appearance aside from Kylo, even though he is officially titled Supreme Leader Kylo Ren. The casting is the same as the “old Kylo” but the paint is quite different. Instead of the textured matte finish, we have a more generic, smooth glossy finish with the red lines (denoting damage / fractures) running across his helmet (which he destroyed in Ep. 8 and has presumably crudely forged back together for Ep. 9). Much like all the Kylo toys during Ep. 8’s merchandising run portrayed him without a helmet, everything so far depicts him with the helmet with the cracks, which sometimes seem to glow orange or red.

Supreme Leader Kylo Ren Character Car

D-0 Character Car

It’s tough to comment extensively on these guys without having seen the film, but the tiny D-0 seems to be a fair representation albeit in a position he hasn’t really been shown in on any promotional material thus far. Rey is in her full fledged Jedi gear with her monk-like robes (girls aren’t monks, what’s the word…?) and lightsabers built into the vehicle, which is always a nice touch. Of the 3, I think this is the best looking Rey.

Rey (Rise of Skywalker) Character Car

Jet Trooper Character Car

Sith Trooper Character Car

Even knowing what little there is to know, I called 2 of the Wave 2 releases based on other toys alone: the Jet Trooper and the Sith Trooper. We don’t know much about either of these except perhaps that the Jets can fly and may possess some kind of specialized weapon. The Sith Toopers are a complete wildcard as far as I can tell. What’s interesting is that there are also some action figures labeled as Sith Jet Troopers who don the red armor of the Sith and yet the unique helmets of the Jets. Time will tell how significant these “new” troopers are, but I do want to draw everyone’s attention back to a certain other Character Car…the First Order Executioner…remember how lackluster and fleeting that shit was…?

The Mandalorian Character Car

With The Mandalorian starting this past week on Disney Plus it’s no surprise we’re getting some crossover, and I’m ok with it. I haven’t watched the show yet but this is a very nice looking car.

That’s all we got for now, but man, that seems kinda light for the end of the Skywalker Saga (and a new live-action TV series). The craze for Star Wars toys and general merchandise has died down a lot since the days of Rogue One and Force Awakens, but hopefully we’ll get at least one more Episode IX-centric wave of Character Cars. Maybe Bodhi will be a surprise release…

Character Cars Wave 1

Character Cars Wave 2

But hey, there’s bound to be some other characters from Mandalorian, and the Cal Kestis from the new game (Jedi: The Fallen Order) appears to be getting some exposure, and if LEGOs are anything to go by we’ll be seeing at least 2 “Knights of the Ren” and then there’s that “Zorii Bliss” that’s been popping up, and what about the comic that’s been gaining traction with Doctor Aphra and 0-0-0. And yet still that doesn’t account for all the big guns from the Prequel Trilogy that have been passed over (Qui-Gon, Padme, Mace Windu, Count Dooku, Nute Gunray, etc.), smaller but memorable roles from the Original Trilogy (Bib Fortuna, Leia-as-Boussh, Dengar, and so on), and major characters from Rogue One and Solo left out (Bodhi, Admiral Radus, Tobais Beckett, Dryden Voss, L3-3T), and they still have some uncovered bases from Last Jedi, like DJ and Admiral Holdo and General Hux, all of whom I’d place at greater importance than the Executioner Troopers or BB-9E. C’mom…

Starships

Alrighty then, let’s move on to the Starships. As with the Character Cars there are lots of re-releases, so what we’re focusing on here are “First Appearances” or what I otherwise deem to be an informal/unofficial “First Appearance” for whatever reason (similar to the issue with Kylo’s Character Car).

Starships - Wave 1

  • Wave 1
    • First Order Treadspeeder
    • AT-ST Raider (from The Mandalorian)
    • Resistance A-wing Fighter (not listed as “First Appearance” but I feel like this is a very different paint job than previous A-wings)
  • Wave 2
    • Razor Crest (from The Mandalorian)
    • Poe’s X-wing (new paint job)
    • Resistance Y-wing (not “First Appearance” but new paint job and looks like a longer versionof the Y-wing)
    • B-wing Fighter (I’m pretty positive this isn’t anything new, I jsut try not to miss out on achance to grab one)

Starships - Wave 2

I’m going to continue to feel gypped at not having a diecast model of Supremacy yet.

AT-ST Raider

Realistically we don’t have a whole lot of new stuff to oogle and awe at just yet…I can only hope some of it is being saved for the film’s release, or the audience is going to be very underwhelmed from a visual standpoint. Right off the bat the AT-ST Raider and the Razor Crest are from The Mandalorian, so until I sit down and dig into it I’ll reserve my judgement.

Razor Crest

First Order Treadspeeder

The only real new thing we have is the Treadspeeder, which kinda seems like a step backwards technology-wise when it comes to our Star Wars galaxy. We’ve seen very few wheeled vehicles…like the Sandcrawler, some old Republic-era “tanks,” maybe some other background randoms, all this in opposition to the Landspeeders, Speeder Bikes, Snow (and Sand) Speeders, Han’s and Moloch’s Speeders, the Khetanna, the skiffs from the Khetanna, the pod racers…and hell, if it don’t hover, it tends to walk, like the AT-ATs and AT-STs…see what I’m saying? I mean I’m sure they made a cool action sequence out of it and all that good stuff but terrain-wise it seems like hover vehicles and “walkers” have it taken care of!

What’s left is just slight tweaks on what we’ve already seen, if even that much. I do think the Y-wing has slightly longer engine / tube things. And I guess Poe just decided to change up his color scheme a little since his old X-wing got blowed up. It’s tough to say whether or not the B-wings were just thrown in there or not, but that with some attention on the repainted A-wing could mean some seriously fun dogfights that were teased to us over 3 decades ago!

Poe's X-Wing (New)

Poe’s X-wing

Resistance Y-wing

B-wing

B-wing

The shortage of vehicles does feel a bit strange this time because even if the movie isn’t fawning over a bunch of new spacecrafts we do at least see them and often develop a sense of familiarity from knowing the toys ahead of time. However, as I’m kinda going through that “final trailer” in my head, there looked to be a lot of old-school stuff (like, Original Trilogy) floating around at times, particularly around the time where it looks like the Imperial-era Star Destroyer is lifting up through the ice… Oh and then there’s that huge clusterf!@#$ of “good guy” ships all ready for, I dunno, something. (I think you can even spot Rebels’ Ghost sort of upper-right of center.)

Starships - Rise of Skywalker

Anything Else???

I wasn’t originally going to tack on this little blurb (and then I decided I would, and then though it was long enough already, and just now decided I would again) but in light of all the material that’s been released under the Hot Wheels / Star Wars banner, is it reasonable to expect anything else with this cycle of merchandise? Or has this iteration of the franchise hit its peak? Have all but the hardcore geeks an’ nerds an’ dweebs an’ dorks blown their collective consumer load? I know there is still tons of talk over Rise of Skywalker, this Sequel Trilogy in general, and the entire franchise as a whole, but it seems like the loudest contenders have either fallen in line and are on board with J.J.’s vision or have simply given up on the series completely, to the point where they no longer feel any need to voice their concerns. Or maybe they’re all (or mostly) kinda like me – I’m firmly strapped in and ready for the ride, though I’ve also accepted the fact that this isn’t at all that I’d hoped it’d be.

So is that it? Maybe something else around the release…? It seems difficult to justify anything at this point unless there’s something new in the pipeline already. There does seem to be a Rey All Terrain vehicle with updated Rise of Skywalker packaging but it’s still the “same Rey” design from before. (After a quick look, I see that Rey, Kylo, BB-8, and FO Stormtrooper are being re-released with new packaging, but that seems to be the extent of it for the time being.)

What I’m really keeping my eye out for is one of those track sets that always seems to elude me. Sometimes these track sets are related to the film at hand…and sometimes not…but many of them contain an obscure Character Car, such as the “dark Chewbacca” and a battle damaged BB-8. I’m not gonna lie and say that these are the greatest cars ever, but they do exist for what it’s worth. And besides, we have gotten some cool exclusives in years past – we got Finn waaay ahead, not to mention Gamorrean Guard, Jedi Luke, (again, way ahead of his standalone release), and a clean, undamaged Ezra Bridger, again several months if not a couple of years before the standalone release.

Whew that took about a million years longer than I wanted it to. What do you think of this new stuff? Favorite car? Favorite ship? Is all this stuff floating around pretty freely in your area yet or are you still waiting for even just the first wave? Let me know what’s goin’ on where you are!
