A Pre-Episode IV Version of Darth Vader

Before the original Star Wars swept the world in May of ’77, a comic book series began in April of that year in an effort drum up interest. As such, much of the writing and illustrating took place while the film was in production and some of what we take for granted today wasn’t yet set in stone. By far the coolest example I’ve seen of this is the Green Darth Vader!

Hot Wheels commemorated this oddity 2 or 3 years ago by releasing the usual Darth Vader Character Car with a shiny, reflective green paint job and rubber tires. Both the card back and the box it came in are recreations of the iconic first cover, with big ol’ Green Vader in the center, looming behind our would-be heroes.

The back also offers us some history on the whole deal:

A long time ago, in May of 1977, the world was taken on a cinematic adventure in a galaxy far far away with Star Wars: A New Hope. And with it came the creation of a fanbase that has expanded for four decades and counting. But what many people don’t realize, is the introduction of A New Hope came to the masses six months prior to the film release in the form of a six-part comic.

The comic adaptation of the movie was drawn while the movie was still in production which shows through with some different looks to ships and characters. Setting those differences aside, the story does a fantastic job of capturing the movie narrative across the six issues. This year Hot Wheels pays homage to the first comic issue of Star Wars: A New Hope in the form of a green Darth Vader Character Car, matching the first ever appearance of what would become one of the most recognizable villains in history. This highly-detailed green sports car commands the road with a force only the most sinister Sith Lord can.

Vader’s iconic helmet barrels towards enemies with the legendary pilot skills that causes fear in the enemies unfortunate enough to get in the way. Always ready for a fight, Vader’s Lightsaber is at the ready on the side trim of this powerful and ominous speed machine supported by Real Riders tires.

There’s some other fun stuff on the cover to notice, such as Luke and Obi-Wan wielding red lightsabers, Han’s red blaster pistol, and Leia’s black top with her reddish hair.

I wasn’t privy to this when it first came out – apparently it was an online-only sort of deal. Luckily it seems like Hot Wheels made plenty of these to go around and they’re not too hard to find or too pricey on the aftermarket. And yes, I do plan on opening it, I just haven’t. Once we’ve got Qui-Gon, Padme, and Bodhi as Character Cars, then I’ll open it…

(My) Rarest Hot Wheels…?

Ok, I know I’ve been kinda quiet for a bit but I’ve been steadily trying to organize my swath of Character Cars. Storing diecast cars is tricky – you can’t just toss ’em in a big ol’ box because they’re quite heavy for their size and proportionately they can quickly compromise the structure of most common containers. I typically use those plastic bins that are about shoebox-sized. They can get heavy but they stack well and they’re easy to label. I like the dedicated Hot Wheels cases well enough, but they’re expensive ($20 to hold ~50 cars) and they’re not really friendly to oddly shaped cars, so you need something else to stick the oddballs in anyway.

I’m not entirely sure how I ended up on the page…I think I clicked on a picture that led me there or something but regardless, there was on a list of the 25 rarest Hot Wheels. I found the list here though it seems to be duplicated on several sites. A lot of these are non-production cars, i.e. prototypes and promos/exclusives, and I wasn’t really expecting to have my mind blown, but damned if I wasn’t shocked when I landed on the 17th spot:

ARC-170

ARC-170

The ARC-170 in its “rest” position.

Dunno what that is? It’s an old vehicle from the Star Wars: Starships line that Hot Wheels produces intermittently. I don’t remember exactly when it was released but I believe it was sometime during they Force Awakens / Rogue One heyday. The ship itself is marginally obscure, a sort of heavy-duty dogfighter that we catch a glimpse or two of in Episode III, though I believe it’s featured throughout Clone Wars.

ARC-170

The ARC-170 in “extended” position.

For whatever reason, production was halted abruptly after an unusually short run. What makes it so desirable, as the article points out, is that both Hot Wheels collectors and Star Wars collectors clamor over it. $346 seems a little high in my opinion; I think this was a bit of an outlier.

Got anything rare of your own? Let me know!

I always knew it was fairly rare, but I didn’t figure it to be particularly valuable. I found mine at a Barnes & Noble. From several feet away, I happen to glance up and watch some dude put it down on a shelf. I sped over there and snatched it up, feeling slightly better when I got a better look at the guy and realized he was just an employee putting it back where it belonged. And that was that.

I do want to point out that I suspect that the Bulls Eye MHP from the last wave of the original Toy Story line several years ago is probably a lot rarer and only slightly less valuable. There are currently 4 up for sale on eBay going for $237, $210, and 2 more for $340. Of course the question is “are people actually paying those prices” and the answer looks to be no. It appears that 2 have recently been sold, 1 for $173 and the other for $180. Comparatively there are no ARC-170’s for sale but recently a loose one sans stand sold for $50. A brand new packaged one went for $400, so maybe $365 isn’t so unreasonable…?

And there it is! I hope they squeeze at least a couple more cars from Book of Boba Fett…Bib Fortuna would be nice, maybe the big Wookie goon..? Also, with Obi-Wan Kenobi being fairly recent, I think we can expect at least 2 or 3 from them. I’m sure one will be updated Obi-Wan, but I’m really hoping it’ll open the doors for a Qui-Gon car, and maybe an Inquisitor or 2, particularly the (I think) Fifth Brother.

That’s it for now; I promise I’ll get some more pics up soon!

New STAR WARS Character Cars

Star Wars is…well, it certainly is a different beast than it was 10 years ago. The “Disney-fictation” of the franchise has been both a gift and a curse: finally the franchise has access to virtually limitless amounts of money allowing it to grow and expand in multiple directions, however, creative control has been bought out from George Lucas and now sits in the hands of greedy executives who stand for nothing.

The millions (billions?) are really starting to come to fruition with mixed results, and a lot of the success of these TV-format series will rest on the characters and the actors that portray them. Just think about it – Boba Fett had 5 lines in the original trilogy (one of which was “Ahhh!”) and now the actor who portrays him (Temuera Morrison) has probably logged more on-screen Star Wars time than Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, who I’d consider to be the most important person in the franchise this far.

New Star Wars Character Cars

So for better or worse, these new characters are making their way to the Character Car pantheon…which I’m mostly OK with, I just kinda hate to see these while big holes like Qui-Gon, Mace Windu, Dooku, and Bodhi still exist. Our latest batch brings us Fennec Shand and the Dark Trooper.

Fennec Shand Character Car

Fennec comes to us initially from The Mandalorian, having “jumped” shows to become a more prominent character on The Book of Boba Fett where she functions as the namesake’s right hand (wo)man. The car is…alright I guess. Her look is sort of difficult to consolidate into vehicular design, so I don’t want to knock it toomuch. The most obvious “part” is the orange upper part of her helmet, which comes out looking sort of like a basketball on the car itself. I wish that her signature sniper rifle was featured somehow…maybe the exhaust pipes have something to do with it but if so, it ain’t obvious.

At this point I’m convinced that there’s a derelict little office in the corner of some nameless building where 3 or 4 guys meet up once a month and work diligently to inflate Star Wars lore with an ever-increasing number of troopers. I’m not sure if the Dark Troopers were introduced in an animated series or not, but we see them in live action for the first time during The Mandalorian, with some decent screen time given to them late in Season 2.

Dark Trooper Character Car

At a cursory glance these guys are pretty cool until it becomes obvious how OP they are and how many of them there are. Dark Troopers are essentially oversized humanoid droids, roughly appearing as a Stormtrooper clad in black. Being that they are droids they are a little simpler in design, but they make up for it in brute strength and nigh invincibility…unless of course you’ve got a lightsaber which seems to make quick work of ’em. Ok, so the Character Cars themselves for Dark Troopers look like some kind of military van. They’ve got room in the back for who knows what and that bulky, boxy appearance hurtling along on six wheels is plenty intimidating. I dig how the vehicle manages to capture the tone of these guys rather than going for an all out visual replication.

I realize that was a weird when all I set out to do was talk about a couple of character cars but I’m happy running with it! Any thoughts on all this new stuff? I will at least say that so far it’s handled better than the sequel trilogy, so that’s something.
