Hello Kitty (Sanrio) Adds 2 Character Cars to Its Ranks

Alright this is debatably old news but I just got them and they aren’t terribly widespread as far as I can tell at the moment, so we’re runnin’ with it as per the title.

Originally I had been holding out on getting the additional 2 cars whenever I ran across them in a store, but the other day I noticed Amazon selling a boxset of all 5 Hello Kitty Character Cars for just over $20. That’s about $12 more than I’d need to spend in a store, but if I ordered them on the internet, I’d be lucky to get both for under about $15 or so considering shipping, plus I could probably sell the others for at least $5 a pop even though they’re loose. Basically it seemed like a good idea to scoop up this boxset if I didn’t want to keep waiting on ’em to show up at Walmart or Target. If you’re someone in need of all 5 of them, I’d strongly recommend getting the set for yourself. The only draw back – like all of the recent boxsets – is that the cars aren’t individually packaged so you don’t get any individual cards or blisters. Once the box is opened, all 5 are “opened.”

Hello Kitty (Sanrio) Boxset

Um kay that was a tiny bit more rambly than I intended but it’s cool. Allow me to introduce the 2 “new” members of the Helly Kitty / Sanrio clan, My Melody & Cinnamoroll! Let me once again remind you that I know next to nothing about Hello Kitty so please take all of my commentary with a grain of salt and feel free to clue me into any cool tidbits that I wouldn’t notice.

My Melody Character Car

Is My Melody a cat, like Hello Kitty? I am confused, but the car design is fairly clever. It features bucket seats where the ears are except one ear i flopped down so there’s only one seat…? At first I though it strange that the steering wheel was on the right but then I realized they were actively keeping the connection with Japan alive so that’s cool. The “face” as it exists in the grille area walks a line between creepy and cute but I will say that My Melody does a good job of looking like she(?) belongs with the rest of the pack.

Cinnamoroll Character Car

Then there’s Cinnamoroll who’s either a bunny or some kind of puppy dog thing. I just can’t decide based on those ears. The vehicle itself is quite small, like a miniature pickup truck with the ears acting as extended sides on the left and right of the flatbed. There is what appears to be a cottonball-esque tail on the rear, so I’ma go with bunny until I’m told or deduce otherwise. Anyway, the tiny truck is cute but there’s not much else going on aside from the matching tiny tires. I guess what I’m kinda sweatin’ here is finding any kind of connection with “cinnamon,” a “roll,” or an actual “cinnamon roll.” I mean the icing is white but….is that it….?

These Hello Kitty Character Cars may not necessarily tickle my pickle, but I do appreciate the effort made to reach across the gender gap and into something that’s a tad more culturally diverse to boot. There is definitely a place for “cute” cars – just look at those Cutie Cars from Shopkins a few years ago (I almost broke down and started collecting them) and you can see a lot of similarities with these Hello Kitty cars. Let me know what you think and I’ll see you soon!

Update: New 2022 Character Cars

Almost immediately after making my first list of brand new Character Cars, I started finding out about even more of ’em. Most of these waves include other Character Cars that have already been released, so I’m only going to bother with new new new ones. That being said, the Doctor Strange car is marked as “new for 2022” but unless it’s colored differently and I just can’t tell, I’m pretty sure it’s the same car we got a few years back.

I am also leaving out DC and Star Wars because at this moment their “newest” cars have been around for a bit; DC getting the 3 from The Batman, and Bo Katan plus Boba in his new digs from Star Wars.

Marvel

  • America Chavez (“Miss America”)
  • The Mighty Thor (Jane Foster)
  • Doctor Strange (dubious)

Disney

  • Chip
  • Hercules
  • Robin Hood
  • Remy (?)
  • Dug (?)

Sanrio / Hello Kitty

  • My Melody
  • Cinnamaroll

Jurassic World: Dominion

  • Velociraptor ‘Beta’
  • Giganotosaurus

Lightyear<

  • Space Ranger Alpha Buzz Lightyear
  • XL-01 Buzz Lightyear
  • Izzy Hawthorne
  • Sox
  • (something Zurg related…?)

Man oh man, that is a lot to look out for! If you want to give me some money for time and travel there’s a link to the right to donate, otherwise stick around and I’ll get ’em when I get ’em… But honestly, stores around here have been total crap when it comes to stocking new stuff. If there is other new stuff you know of please let me know so I know what to keep an eye out for!

Upcoming / Brand New Character Cars

OK wow, I thought I was almost up to date, but it turns out there are a lot of new Character Cars that have just hit shelves or will very soon!

The Hello Kitty / Sanrio line will be growing by 2, adding My Melody and Cinnaroll to the team.

Disney will add 3 characters over 2 cases – the first will have Chip (Beauty and the Beast) as well as a buncha re-releases, while the second will include both Robin Hood and Hercules, both from their respective eponymous films.

Lastly, at least as far as I know, is in celebration of Jurassic World: Dominion and is comprised of the Giganotosaurus and Velociraptor ‘Beta’ along with 2 other re-releases.

There’s also a Bowser Jr. kart from the Mario Kart line of vehicles; it is not the newish one I found with the glider, but an ever newer one on a new kart with flames or something. Dear Hot Wheels: Make the Koopalings!

Oh and there are also some really neato ships in the vein of the Starships series from Star Wars, but these are from the Lightyear series on Disney+. They remind me of the more exotic, “fun-looking” ships from Battlestar Galactica as opposed to the sometimes “big, gray, dull” aesthetic the pervades Star Wars and Star Trek.

I’ve got some new stuff coming, I just wanted to go ahead and point out this stuff since so much of it is coming down the pipeline right now. And hey, if you want to pass any of your findings on to me, I certainly wouldn’t say no!

Hello Kitty / Sanrio Character Cars

One of the strangest subjects for the ongoing Character Cars, the Hello Kitty or Sanrio intellectual property has been around for a few months now but seems to have fallen a bit below the radar. I picked mine up quite some time ago, and it looks like they were released in the usual 8-piece cases alongside re-released of SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy Cheeks from the eponymous series as well as Robin and Beast Boy from the distant Teen Titans Go! series.

Hello Kitty / Sanrio Character Cars

Now I know absolutely nothing about Hello Kitty or Sanrio or why the two terms seem to be synonymous. I remember a few girls being kinda into Hello Kitty around the end of middle school and early high school but that’s about the extent of my contact. I guess there are other characters involved at some point, because the series consists of:

  • Hello Kitty
  • Keroppi
  • Gudetama

Hello Kitty obviously resembles a cartoon kitten and the well-known logo accompanying the brand. The dark eyes are mapped to the headlights and whiskers are featured on the fenders. The bow is the most recognizable aspect that makes i but overall I think the car leans too much towards red and not enough towards pink…I dunno, maybe this was a change made to make the cars more marketable to boys.

The green one, Keroppi, appears to be the frog of the group. It’s a diminutive vehicle, like an amalgamation of a circus car and some kind of near-feature shuttle. The pod-like seats resemble the bulbous eyes of a frog, and apparently Keroppi wears some kind of red and white striped garment, represented on the back half of the car. What appear to be feet comprise some kind of spoiler…you can kind of stand the car up on the back end to get an impression of an armless Keroppi. It is a bit weird, but it’s also kinda cute and fairly unique.

Keroppi Character Car

For the most part, I’d gather that our childhood brains have no trouble imagining a kitten and a frog as friends, but this!? Gudetama is, as far as I can tell, an egg yolk. Or maybe the whole damn raw egg, I… don’t… know. It’s like half-asleep…or sad maybe…or like angry…? The freakin’ thing is unnerving to say the least. However, if you wanted to turn an egg (more importantly, the inside of an egg) into a character and then turn that into a car, well, mission accomplished. The cabin is a single seat completely encased in a transparent yellow dome. And it’s not just meh, yellow, it’s that deep, gooey, slightly orange yellow that we’d all expect from an egg yolk. The frame and wheels are white because, well, that’s how a cracked egg is colored, I can’t really account for the black line between the “yolk” and “white,” though I’ll chalk it up to artistic interpretation in an attempt to make the light colors “pop” a little more by adding an outline.

Gudetama Character Car

I actually think Gudetama is pretty cool albeit supremely weird. Maybe knowing the real character would change my perception, but knows. For now though, just check out the back of the yellow dome – Hot Wheels has worked a frickin’ butt into a character car based off an egg. This is some Twilight Zone level shit.

Hello Kitty / Sanrio Character Cars

So there we go, another somewhat random set of Character Cars. It feels like a weird choice to me though, especially since Hot Wheels are generally associated with boys and Hello Kitty with girls…not that I think toys need to be gender-specific, I’m just thinking of it from a sales perspective. I just don’t see boys perusing the Hot Wheels and going, “oh shit, they made the Hello Kitty critters into cars!” or the girls stumbling across the cars and going, “I love having Hello Kitty characters as vehicles!” Why not give us Krang, Bebop, and Rocksteady instead? Or Splinter, April, and Casey Jones? Or got back to MOTU and give us Evil-Lyn, She-Ra, Triklops!? Yeah ok. “Sanrio” it is.
