Assuming I’ve still got the attention of “character car” fans – or perhaps hardcore Star Wars nuts, either works – you’re probably aware of 2 of the most limited vehicles produced for the line. These would be promotions for the 2015 Celebration Star Wars in Anaheim and the 2016 Celebration in Europe; 2015 saw the release of R2-KT (not exactly a character, but certainly a noble gesture) while this past year gave us Prototype Armor Boba Fett.
(Just FYI, I bought the latter, but the former still runs a little pricey for my blood…maybe when there’s nothing left to buy…and I did just manage to find the Black Batman Hot Rod…)
Anyway, while the 2015 choice was essentially outside of the Star Wars reality, Boba’s white prototype armor was a great choice to appeal to the hardcore nerds without alienating casual fans as something “super-essential.” Honestly though, the appeal of these is limited since – so far – they’ve both been existing cars with new paint jobs. (”White Boba” even sports the same dent in his helmet.) Still, I’m glad they’ve kept their choices ultra-nerdy.
As pretty much any Star Wars fan now knows, Carrie Fisher, the actress who played Princess Leia, passed away just a couple of days after Christmas 2016. (R.I.P. Carrie and Leia – few people have the distinction of portraying a character so widely recognized.) Because of this, some sort of Leia-based vehicle seems like a fantastic tribute and way to honor Fisher’s memory. I’m not really sure what they could do though. The most obvious thing that comes to mind is a Boushh vehicle, or rather a “Leia-dressed-as-Boushh” vehicle. On the one hand it seems like a great way to keep “Leia” in the mix, but on the other hand it isn’t exactly Leia, though I would assume that most fans associate “Boushh” with Leia being underneath the mask and not some sort of separate character.
There’s also the possibility of a bikini-clad Leia (”Slave Leia”?), but I don’t really know if Hot Wheels could/would attempt a stab at the “sexy” aspect of the character. Really the only other thing I can think of is her older appearance in Episode VII. Again I’m not really sure how it would translate…take the existing Leia car and color the white part blue…? I dunno, seems like we’d get something a little more exciting. Whatever the case, I think Hot Wheels would be remiss not to take the occasion to honor both the actress and the character in whatever way they see fit.
What do you think we’ll see for Star Wars Celebration 2017? Can you think of a novel and respectable way to adapt Leia into something worth of a tribute? Or do you think it’ll be someone totally different? Share your thoughts with me!
